The day's walk begins at the Notre-Dame-de-Verdelais basilica, where the Museum of Sacred Art and the Célestins convent are nearby. Before climbing the Stations of the Cross and discovering the 16 chapels that make it up, you will pass by the tomb of Toulouse-Lautrec, the famous painter and great French lithographer of the late XNUMXth century.

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 9,7 km
Iconic to discover nearby: The Ducal Castle of Cadillac

You will then reach the monumental Calvary of Verdelais, established on the slopes of Mount Cussol, recently restored.
Don't miss a visit to the windmill, one of the few flour-making windmills in the department. From there you can discover a remarkable panorama over the Garonne valley!
Take the time to visit, on the top of a hill, the Malagar estate in Saint-Maixant, where he stayed
regularly the famous writer François Mauriac.
The town of Saint-Maixant was built on the edge of the flood zone, as is the case for most municipalities bordering the Garonne. The town has been occupied since Antiquity, as suggested by the probable remains of a Gallo-Roman villa under and around the parish church of Saint-Maixant. Like Saint-Macaire, stone quarries intended for construction and which were the subject of a flourishing trade, were exploited from the XNUMXth century on the initiative of a Macarian family, the Rufz de Lavison. .
Saint-Maixant today is a wine-growing commune; its vineyards are distributed mainly on the well-exposed hillsides, the alluvial plains being occupied both by crops and a habitat scattered in hamlets.
Then head for the palus and the banks of the Garonne on the edge of the town of Sainte-Croix-du-Mont, for a very natural walk.
