In the heart of the city founded in 1270, reach the central square surrounded by covered areas or "arcs", where there are houses with balconies decorated with ironwork from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. At the northwest corner is the elegant XNUMXth-century Town Hall, restored and extended in the early XNUMXth century. The second floor houses the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology. Other monuments deserve special attention, such as the remains of the Cordeliers chapel which dates back to the foundation of the bastide, the Belliquet house, a rare XNUMXth century building and the Hôtel de Canolle from the same period. The city was until the Revolution protected by powerful ramparts. Six gates allowed access to the city. All that remains today is the imposing gate of the Grand Port built at the beginning of the XNUMXth century, flanked by the Tour Richard and the Tour Barrée. The walk continues on the quays, fully equipped, which passing tourists discover and Libournais rediscover... The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, a beautiful Gothic building, dominated by its impressive bell tower, closes the discovery of the bastide. Nearby are the remains of the XNUMXth century ramparts, dismantled during the Revolution. Do not miss under any circumstances with the arrival of the beautiful days the festival of the Confluence and Fest'Arts, festival of the Arts of the Street. Libourne is a cultural city, but also festive!
