The golden wine flows in the Sauternes, world famous for its famous sweet white wines. The Sauternes region is crossed by the Ciron. Propitious to astonishing canoe descents or delicious romantic walks, this modest tributary from the Landes region proves to be essential in the appearance of botrytis cinerea which, in the autumn, is the basis of the great sweet wines, qualified by Mauriac " of an exaggeration of the exquisite".
The Sauternes is discovered gently, rich in a thousand details, with its omnipresent stone walls which reveal the abundance of limestone on the surface of the ground.

The start

From Place de la Mairie, walk down Rue Principale, towards the church and the wash house. After the washhouse, take the first path on your right. The first castle that you will see is not the least famous, it is the Guiraud castle, after 2km100 of walking. It is the only 1st Grand Cru Classé in 1855 certified in organic farming. You can visit it every day, from 10 a.m. to 18 p.m. without an appointment.

Walk 1km500 to discover a totally different castle. Château Filhot is a family estate created in 1709 by Romain de Filhot, former adviser to the Parliament of Bordeaux. Famous for its wine, Filhot is also known for its English-style park!

After 8km of walking and on the next two kilometers, you will pass near 4 other castles. The first is Château Lamourette, acquired in 1860, has been passed down from generation to generation to this day. The second is the Domaine de la Gauche. Its 6 hectares, spread over the communes of Bommes and Sauternes, border the plots of Premiers Grands Crus, such as the Tour Blanche. The third château is undoubtedly the most famous of the three. This is Rayne Vigneau's castle. The castle sits on a magnificent and unique cut dominating the Sauternes. It boasts a style full of intensity, freshness and length. The last of this sector is the Château la Tour Blanche. Also classified as a 1st Grand Cru in 1855, like the previous one, it is today a school of viticulture and oenology.

You will end the walk with two castles classified Second Cru of Sauternes in 1855. Château Lamothe Despujols will be on your right, it is both a Grand Cru Classé of Sauternes and a family structure. This small domain culminates on the heights of the appellation. Château Lamothe-Guignard will end your beautiful walk. Located on one of the highest points in the commune of Sauternes, it dominates the Ciron valley and offers you a panoramic view of the whole of Sauternes.
