The Dune du Pilat, an exceptional natural heritage
Made up of approximately 60 million m3 of sand, the dune of Pilat moves from 1 to 5 m per year mainly under the action of the wind.
Her current measurements:
- 2,9km long
- more than 600 m wide
- 100 to 110 meters high depending on the year
In season, a staircase (of 160 steps) leads you to the top of the dune, where a breathtaking panorama awaits you over the whole of the Arcachon bay, the Atlantic Ocean and the user forest of La Teste de Buch. Take a deep breath of sea air and let yourself be seduced by the whole palette of colors on offer: the blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the green of the pines and the white of the Banc d'Arguin.
All that remains is to savor the present moment.
The Dune du Pilat reveals its secrets to you
Between ocean and forest, the Dune du Pilat is a true protected natural monument. When and how was it formed? How does she move? What plant and animal species are there? What traces of human occupation have been observed there? Take advantage of the many free activities offered by the Grand Site of the Dune du Pilat to discover its secrets!
For example, opt for a one-hour commented walk (free!):
- During the day, every Sunday at 11 a.m.
- At sunset, every Friday evening in June at 20 p.m./in September at 19 p.m. Every Monday and Thursday in July at 20 p.m. / in August at 19 p.m.
Or come and meet one of the posted receptions offered throughout the year (depending on the weather). On the crest of the dune, you can observe the many components of the landscape thanks to a telescope and ask all your questions to a mediator.
