Baptized "the king of lighthouses, the lighthouse of kings" or even "The Versailles of the Seas", Cordouan is the oldest lighthouse in Europe (1611), the oldest French lighthouse in activity and the only lighthouse at sea still open to the public.
Standing majestically at the entrance to theEstuary of the Gironde, 7 km from the Médoc coast, it was classified Historical Monument in 1862 (the same year as Notre-Dame-de-Paris) and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on July 24, 2021. At the top of its 301 steps awaits you a spectacular panorama of theEstuary of the Gironde, Médoc beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.
How to visit him?
Cordouan can be visited from April to October. It takes 30 minutes to cross by boat from Verdon-sur-Mer with the companies Bohemian and Cruising Galantaises. Before or after your visit to Cordouan, we recommend the Grave Lighthouse to discover the exterior appearance of the Cordouan lighthouse from 1611 to the present day thanks to a unique 3D animation.
