UNESCO sites

There are no less than 14 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List in Gironde!

Bordeaux, Port of the Moon is at the top of the list: this vast perimeter of 1810 hectares has been inscribed since 2007. Saint-Emilion is not to be outdone: 8 villages in the Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion were registered in 1999 as “cultural landscapes”. A world first! And the youngest, registered on July 24, 2021, the Versailles des Mers, our dear Cordouan Lighthouse.

Other exceptional sites have been recognized as part of the Vauban sites in 2008: Lock of the Gironde Estuary, composed of Citadel of Blaye on the right side, Fort Pâté on an island, and Fort Medoc on the left bank, thus joined the World Heritage List.

Within the Routes of Compostela, 71 monuments as well as 7 sections of paths have been inscribed since 1998 on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the official title of "Roads of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle in France", serial cultural property (consisting of several buildings). In Gironde, there are 7 of them: Our Lady of the End of the Lands in Soulac-sur-Mer, the Saint-Seurin Basilica, Saint-André cathedral and St. Michael's Basilica in Bordeaux, theAbbey of La-Sauve-Majeure and l'Saint Pierre church in La Sauve, and the old Bazas Cathedral.

Finally, since the recognition of 16 other architectural works by Le Corbusier, on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016, the City Frugès in Pessac is also a must.
