Village of Vertheuil

Surrounded by vineyards, near the Reysson marshes, the pretty village of Vertheuil is steeped in history. On an eminence, the castle with a long keep from the end of the XNUMXth century, is surrounded by a large enclosure from the same period. The Porte de l'Audience (XNUMXth century) retains its defensive arrangements. Below the castle, in a valley, the village is grouped around the imposing abbey. The church is a grandiose building with three naves extended by an ambulatory apse. At the junction of the apse and the nave are two bell towers and the apse of the church is fortified. To the south of the nave, opens a beautiful Romanesque portal of Saintonge influence, remodeled in the XNUMXth century. Adjoining the church remains a wing of the monks' dwelling from the middle of the XNUMXth century. In front of the church, the landscaped square retains a beautiful cross. In the surrounding streets, old stone houses stand.
