Village of Verdelais

Verdelais, sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary is one of the great centers of pilgrimage in New Aquitaine. The entire village (registered site), of high architectural quality, includes the Notre-Dame basilica, central element of the village, modified by numerous works in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. The facade and its imposing bell tower surmounted by the statue of the Virgin dominates the refurbished forecourt. Next door is the Célestins convent and its two cloisters. One houses the presbytery, the other, built by the Célestins today is the seat of the town hall, the school and the museum of sacred art. The alleys designed to welcome the faithful during pilgrimages are lined with beautiful buildings and rows of lime trees. A wide staircase leads to the cemetery where the painter Toulouse-Lautrec rests and allows you to climb Mount Cussol by the Stations of the Cross to reach the Calvary.
