Village of Castelviel

The highest point in Entre-deux-Mers, Castelviel owes its name to an old castle erected around the XNUMXth century. The village conceals beautiful monuments among which is its Romanesque church Notre-Dame. It is remarkable for its single nave covered with a molded framework from the end of the XNUMXth century or the beginning of the XNUMXth century, discovered under a wooden paneling during restoration work. On the south wall of the nave opens a magnificent Saintonge-style Romanesque portal opening into a forepart. It has a door surrounded by two blind arched doors. The door has five arches representing a zodiac linked to the labors of the months, the fight between Vices and Virtues, hunting scenes and rope pullers. The village has around thirty stone houses which belong to the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. Near the church, the Château de la Salle dates from the end of the XNUMXth century.
