Village of Asques

Located at the end of a limestone plateau dominating a meander of the Dordogne, Asques developed around a commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem. Of this, the only vestige is the Saint-Jean church, with its single nave with a flat apse preceded by a bell tower redone in the XNUMXth century. A side aisle and a neoclassical facade complete the building. In the village are beautiful stone houses, a XNUMXth century Calvary and a XNUMXth century washhouse-fountain. At the foot of the cliff, the small port was very flourishing in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries. small fishing boats, barges loaded with barrels of Haut Pays wine and couriers for the transport of vine stakes and various goods. Reflecting this prosperity, the houses grouped around the slipway where fishermen, gabarriers and various craftsmen lived. A nautical stop accommodates a few boats.
