Lock Vauban of the estuary inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO

A major work of the famous engineer Vauban, the Verrou de l'Estuaire is located on either side of the Gironde estuary to monitor Bordeaux and protect it from enemy maritime attacks. It consists of three fortifications: the Citadel of Blaye on the right bank, Fort Pâté on an island, and Fort Médoc on the left bank. Le Verrou de l'estuaire has been inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO since 2008 within the Network of Major Vauban Sites. The citadel of Blaye is permanently open and is free. Fort Médoc can also be visited and admission is charged. Fort Pâté cannot be visited.
