Troglodyte houses on the corniche road

Between Bourg and Gauriac, the Corniche road runs along the Gironde estuary. Many troglodyte houses are perched in the cliff. The stone of the canton of Bourg has long been extracted to build cities such as Bordeaux. It was shipped by river on barges and its use continued until the XNUMXth century. The workers then understood very quickly that these "holes" from which the stone was extracted could serve as their dwelling. This is how these houses with their original character were born. When the XNUMXth century sounded the death knell for the use of stone, these houses were taken over by fishermen from the Estuary. You can see them from the road or walk past them on the hiking trails, but you can't visit them: some are still inhabited!
