Formerly Bourg-sur-Gironde, the old village is today on the banks of the Dordogne because of the lengthening of the Bec d'Ambès due to the contribution of alluvium. The village is suspended above the water with its two upper and lower towns. The lower town, which developed on the extreme edge of the Dordogne, has wide quays which testify to the once very intense port activity. A beautiful wash house (1828) is there, supplied with water by a fountain located at the foot of the limestone cliff. The Porte Batailleyre or Porte de la Mer (Historic Monument), built on the rock, connects the upper town and the port. In the upper town are the remains of medieval fortifications, some old houses (XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries) and the castle of the Citadel, rebuilt in the XNUMXth century, surrounded by a pretty French garden.
