Medieval town of Saint-Macaire

Beautiful urban ensemble, the medieval city of Saint-Macaire, perched high on its rock overlooking the Garonne, has retained a monumental finery, reflecting its prosperity over the centuries. From its fortified enclosure remain the three gates of Benauge, Thuron and Rendesse. Place du Mercadiou, in the heart of the city, is lined with covered arcades and XNUMXth and XNUMXth century houses, including the Henri IV post house. The Saint-Sauveur church with its trefoil apse has remarkable murals. Next to it are the remains of the Romanesque cloister. Strolling through the streets, we discover the houses of wealthy merchants, the most spectacular of which is the house of Tardes, built in the XNUMXth century, on stone quarries, embellished during the Renaissance and became a private mansion. Romantic laundries, those of La Barette and Thuron adjoin the old ramparts of the city.
