The ancient city of Bazas, which dates back to Antiquity, has been the seat of a bishopric since the 1530th century. The old Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral was built in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries on the model of the great Gothic cathedrals of northern France. The portals of the western façade represent the finest example of Gothic statuary in the Gironde. The building is surrounded by a very beautiful square established in the XNUMXth century. Here you can find the residences of notables, private mansions, the most striking of which are the Hôtel de Laboyrie (late XNUMXth century, early XNUMXth century), the astronomer's house built around XNUMX or the Hôtel d'Andraut (XNUMXth century). ). In the adjacent streets there are many half-timbered houses built at the end of the XNUMXth century, some of which have been restored. Other monuments in the city include the town hall, the presidial palace and the XNUMXth century market hall.
