Hamel Castle

French, English, Spanish

Overlooking the Garonne from the hillside, the Château du Hamel enjoys a strategic location. The lords of Castets are attested from the 1314th century; a fortress was to command the area from that time. A century later, a co-lordship seems to share power over the site. Then, in 1697, Raymond Guilhem de Got, one of Pope Clement V's nephews, became its lord and had a castle built there with the authorization of King Edward II. Subsequently, the seigniory changed hands several times, passing under the thumb of the great families of the region. In the XNUMXth century, it was fitted out by the leader of the Protestant party, Jean de Fabas, who made it a formidable position. Finally, Charles du Hamel acquired the seigneury in XNUMX and left his name to the castle, which was modified several times during the XNUMXth, XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.
