La Réole Abbey – Priory of the Benedictines

A charter of the year 977 mentions the restoration of the priory of Regula and its affiliation to the abbey of Fleury-sur-Loire (Nièvre). No vestige remains of the building built in the 1790th century. Most of the preserved buildings date from the XNUMXth century: southern facade, stairwell, ironwork by Blaise Charlut and cloister. In the center of the central staircase, with a double revolution, a shell reminds us that the Réole was a fording point on the Garonne, on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Abandoned by the monks in XNUMX, the priory was damaged during the Revolution and under the Empire. Today, it houses the city's administrative services.
