The imposing abbey, which dominates the old town, is one of the largest Benedictine establishments in Aquitaine. In 1080, the Bishop of Bazas donated it to the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Florent de Saumur, responsible for restoring discipline there. Very prosperous in the 1886th and XNUMXth centuries, the abbey was ransacked during the conflicts of the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion. Its abbey church (Historic Monument XNUMX) nevertheless preserves beautiful monumental testimonies from the middle of the XNUMXth century. Its vaulted apse has three tangent apses from the first half of the XNUMXth century. The regular crossing transept is topped with a domed vault, one of the first Gothic vaults in Gironde, from the second half of the XNUMXth century. The nave, destroyed in the XNUMXth century, was rebuilt according to the original plan, as was the western facade. The Romanesque capitals of the apse are remarkable.
