Laid out from 1730 to 1755, according to the plans of architects Gabriel father and son, framed by quays with uniform facades, the former royal square constitutes a magnificent architectural ensemble, recently restored (buildings classified as Historic Monuments or listed in the Inventory Supplementary Historical Monuments). It is confined, on the river side, by the Palais de la Bourse to the north and the former Hôtel des Fermes to the south, characterized on the floors by columns bearing triangular pediments. The same layout is found in the western pavilion. The majesty of the facades as well as the variety of sculpted decoration make it one of the most typical achievements of architecture in the time of Louis XV. The equestrian statue of Louis XV, which stood in the middle of the square until 1792, was replaced in the XNUMXth century by the fountain of the three graces.
